Google Analytics has added a live reporting with Real Time Reports. The new reports provide a real time view of visitors accessing your website. Google Analytics released a Real Time, a new dashboard that will show you website traffic and certain metrics as it happens. Google Analytics are committed to the free version, by making this feature free and available from starting today. The data is available within 2 seconds of a visitors accessing your website.
This simply means you can now see active or Online Visitors on your site. There are free Real time Web Analytics services like whos.amung.us and Trend Counter to track the live visitors but they show arrogant stats. On comparing whos.amung.us live stats with Real Time, we found that whos.amung.us shows double live visitors than that shown by Analytics.
Main Dashboard
The image shows the main dashboard of Real Time and top of this report is the most visually appealing part. There are 1680 active visitors on the site and these visitors are active within the last 30 minutes. Every 10 seconds this number updates and the graph to right shows pageviews by minute and second. Looking the middle of the main dashboard we can see the top referrals that are sending our site traffic. The top active pages shows us where all of our visitors currently on our site. These visitors have been active in the last 5 minutes, any one is not active for over 5 minutes is dropped. It also shows us Top Keywords that visitors searched for to find our site, and what locations they are coming from.
If there is an increase in active visitors on the site the Right Now number goes up and is highlighted in green color. It there is decrese in Right Now, number goes down and is highlighted in Pink.
Real Time Data can be helpful in the following Business Scenarios:
- If you are publisher, you often need a real time data to understand what content is popular right now, so you can optimize the placement of that content.
- If you are retailer, you might want to understand, in real time, the launch of new campaign. This is especially useful if you are using a channel, like social media.
- If you are holding a physical event, you might want to understand, in real time, how people in that location are using your website.
The real time reports are not real time data for all metrics, only a subset of metrics. You can access to real time stats for:

It also shows you which campaigns have driven visitors enabling you to act on emerging and channels such as twitter, other social networks and news sites.
